Samsung’s latest prices for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will make your head spin a little. The company now sells the Galaxy Z Flip 7 through its Certified Re‑Newed program, but in the United States, the refurbished base variant starts at $939, while a brand-new Galaxy Z Flip 7 with the same storage (256GB) is on sale for about $899, 9to5Google spotted on Wednesday.
That means you’ll have to pay $40 extra for a refurbished unit, even though refurbished devices are usually aimed at people who want to save money.
Samsung’s Certified Re-Newed label indicates that a phone has been inspected, repaired (if necessary), and repackaged. The warranties that come with a Re-Newed phone versus a new one are nearly identical, with Re-Newed units also offering “additional coverage and 24/7 support with Samsung Care+.”
However, the company calculates its refurb discount from the original $1,099 MSRP rather than its current promotional prices. Aggressive discounts on new stock, therefore, undercut the Certified Re‑Newed price, at least for the base model.
Higher‑storage refurbished variants can still cost less than new versions at current promo levels; for instance, a 256GB Galaxy Z Fold 7 costs $1,999 at the time of writing, while a Re-Newed unit costs $1,699. But for now, consumers in the US who compare prices directly on Samsung’s site will see that a new Galaxy Z Flip 7 remains the better deal than its Certified Re‑Newed counterpart, unless they have a specific reason to prefer the refurb route, such as a particular color or environmental concerns.
