Suno’s v6 AI music models let creators rework a chorus or lyric by describing the change, with the company promising to preserve the rest of the song. Released on September 9, the generation was developed with music-industry partners.
The partners include Warner Music Group, recording and music-publishing company BMG, and Believe, which helps independent artists and labels release music. Their involvement reaches beyond supplying training material: the arrangements also cover payments and future products in which individual artists can choose to participate.
Editing a Song Without Starting Over
Suno’s editing example in the announcement starts with an existing song and asks the model to give its chorus a gospel choir. The intended result is a different vocal arrangement in that section, with the surrounding song retained. A creator can also request a single lyric change, giving them a way to revise a detail without rebuilding the whole track.
The model can combine creative ingredients, too. A request can take vocals from one of a creator’s songs and drums from another, then add new lyrics and a different style. In Simple mode, Suno says the model works out which creation or editing operation the instruction calls for, reducing the need to choose separately between tools such as Cover, Remix and Extend.
Suno divides the generation into three choices. It positions v6 for more controlled results and v6-wild for less predictable experimentation; an idea from wild can be brought back into v6 for refinement. Its current model guide assigns the versions to these plans:
All earlier models have been retired from generation. Existing songs remain unchanged in users’ libraries and can still be played and shared. Creators can keep working from those songs, but new versions use v6 models, so the results can sound different from the original.
Who Supplies the Music and Receives the Money
Suno chief product officer Jack Brody told Music Business Worldwide that v6 was trained from scratch on a different dataset, including licensed partner material. Warner decided which music it supplied, and Suno said BMG’s music had begun being added. Music from participating Believe and TuneCore artists and labels is also due to be included.
The payment arrangement runs through the companies controlling those music rights. Brody said a portion of Suno’s revenue would go to partners from launch day, and those partners would determine how to distribute it. That puts the onward allocation to artists and songwriters in the rightsholders’ hands; the public announcements give no payment amounts or individual allocation formulas.
Warner’s agreement committed the companies to licensed models and settled litigation between Warner and Suno. Warner also promised artists and songwriters control over whether their names, likenesses, voices and compositions would be used in new AI music.
BMG’s deal with Suno covers both recordings and music-publishing repertoire, the rights in the underlying songs. BMG says participating artists and songwriters will be compensated and have their rights protected. The agreement also settles prior use of BMG’s recordings and publishing works.
Individual artist products are a later part of the partnership. Suno is developing experiences in which fans can remix and reimagine participating artists’ music, with artists choosing whether to join and getting paid. Brody said the rights could differ for those derivative works, which build on existing music, from the original-song creation offered by the v6 models.
Getting New Songs Beyond Suno
An agreement with Believe gives new-model output a distribution opportunity. Tracks artists make with Suno’s new industry-partner model become eligible for release through Believe and its TuneCore service for self-releasing musicians, connecting creation on Suno to distribution on listening platforms.
This changes Believe’s earlier policy of blocking music made with Suno’s then-current models. The new eligibility covers the partner model’s output. Suno says its watermarking and fingerprinting protections, designed to identify its music off-platform, will apply to music distributed through Believe and TuneCore.
Permission to use a generated song commercially is different relationship: between Suno and the person using its service. Suno’s paid-subscription rights guidance grants commercial-use permission for songs downloaded while subscribed, including distribution, sales and use in film or games. Suno explicitly distinguishes that permission from copyright protection, which it cannot guarantee.
Exporting files also follows the download policy effective since September 3, six days before the new model launch. Suno Pro subscribers receive 20 song downloads a month and Premier subscribers 60; Premier workflows in Suno Studio, its production workspace for working with separate musical parts and samples, have no download cap. A song counts once even if downloaded again or in several formats.
Under the current free-account rules, people who joined before September 3, 2026 have up to seven lifetime trial downloads. Those joining on or after that date may occasionally receive trials. Both groups can buy additional downloads, and trial downloads are for personal use only.
Suno therefore retains a route for taking songs off its platform, within those allowances. Rival AI music service Udio’s operating guidance says audio, video and separate-part downloads are disabled following its Universal Music Group partnership. For creators who need files for release or further production, that is a concrete difference between the services.
