Jagex Reveals New RuneScape MMO at RuneFest 2026

Jagex is working on a new RuneScape MMO, with the as-yet-unnamed project becoming the fourth MMO in the long-running franchise. The developer revealed the game during RuneFest 2026 alongside extensive plans for RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds, as well as an animated adaptation of its fantasy universe.

Jagex unveiled the new project during RuneFest 2026, its annual celebration of RuneScape and its community. This year’s event took place at the Birmingham NEC in the UK, on Oct. 3-4 and attracted more than 6,000 attendees, making it the largest RuneFest held so far.

The new MMO remains early in development, but Jagex says it will use Unreal Engine to bring the world of Gielinor to life for a new generation of players while retaining the freedom, depth and community-led approach that have shaped RuneScape over the past 25 years. A concept teaser provided the first glimpse at the project during RuneFest, with the above image taken from this.

Rather than replacing its existing games, Jagex describes the new MMO as another expansion of the wider RuneScape universe. The company has spent RuneScape’s 25th anniversary year emphasizing plans to turn the franchise into a broader ecosystem of games and connected experiences.

That expansion won’t be restricted to games, either. Jagex has begun work on a RuneScape animated adaptation, alongside Lyrical Media and Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White, with further details expected in 2027.

RuneScape, Old School, and Dragonwilds All Have Major Updates Coming

The original RuneScape is preparing for RuneScape Reignited on Dec. 2, bringing together recent updates alongside a Remastered Journey, Adventure Guide, fresh economy and new hi-scores. Full Reignited access will be available without membership between Dec. 2 and Dec. 12, while the game’s Plugin API is also scheduled to launch in October.

Jagex’s 2027 RuneScape roadmap is built around three major story arcs. Hoard of Dragons begins in January as a follow-up to Dragon Slayer, City of Gnomes continues a storyline dating back to 2002, and Secrets of Karamja introduces a new endgame raid. Other planned additions include an Agility rework, new bosses, expanded areas and a new Grandmaster Quest.

Old School RuneScape has an equally busy schedule. New endgame raid The Fractured Archive launches Oct. 20, followed by Hardcore Worlds on Nov. 4. Menaphos will finally open in 2027, bringing the Master-level Fool’s Gold quest, Old School’s first Skilling Dungeon and the Soul Altar. Further 2027 plans include a Mining and Smithing rework, more quests and Dungeons of Gielinor.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is also expanding, beginning with the Luminance update in December. It introduces Elves and the Prayer skill while setting up 2027’s Blood Crystal Saga. Jagex plans quarterly content updates alongside smaller monthly additions throughout 2027, with Hunter and Slayer among the incoming skills.

Official mod support through CurseForge is also planned for 2027, complete with creation tools and an in-game mod browser.
